One of the highlights of our recent South of France trip was a day trip to the storybook village of Gordes. Perched dramatically on the southern edge of the Vaucluse Plateau, this hilltop gem in Provence is not only postcard-perfect — it’s steeped in layers of history, beauty, and heartfelt moments.
Its honey-hued stone buildings trace their roots back to Roman times, but Gordes flourished in the Middle Ages as a fortified village built to fend off invasions. The Château de Gordes, originally constructed in 1031 and later renovated in the Renaissance, still stands as the village’s crown. During WWII, Gordes courageously joined the French Resistance and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Today, it draws in travelers, artists, and dreamers alike — and we became one of them.
The first glimpse of Gordes took our breath away. Imagine cascading stone houses drenched in golden light, wrapped around a cliffside, with panoramic views over the Luberon Valley. It felt like we had stepped into a living painting — timeless, textured, and utterly dreamlike.
We didn’t follow a strict walking route. Gordes invites you to simply wander and soak it in. The mix of rustic charm and elegant touches makes every corner feel special. One of the best spots was actually where we parked — near the Gordes Lookout Point, offering stunning views over the countryside and even private pools shimmering below.
Getting There: A Scenic Drive & A Steep Surprise
We left our hotel in Provence (details about our hotel here!) and drove about 1 hour and 30 minutes to Gordes. The approach was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking — definitely one of the most challenging drives we had in Provence. We unknowingly took a route that led us to a steep and narrow local parking area, which looked like it belonged to the village priest and locals. It felt nearly 90 degrees steep, and we couldn’t even see what lay ahead.
But when we reached the top, we found a small, nearly empty parking spot — and an incredible sense of relief and triumph. From that moment, we knew we were in for something special.
Wandering Through Cobblestone Charm
We wandered through the sun-drenched streets of Gordes, where honey-colored stone houses leaned gently into one another, each one adorned with shutters in soft shades of Provençal blue. The textures, the colors, the quiet elegance — it truly felt like walking through a living postcard.
We stumbled upon the village church just as mass was ending. Stepping inside offered a cool, peaceful break from the sun — and an unexpected grace. The priest gave us a warm blessing in honor of our upcoming wedding anniversary, a moment that felt both intimate and deeply grounding.
Lunch at La Renaissance Gordes
Hunger hit just as the village was waking up for lunch. We grabbed a table at La Renaissance Gordes, located right beside a charming fountain. The setting was refreshing, and the restaurant had a warm, family-friendly vibe. Ordering was stress-free thanks to their QR code system — we simply selected our meals and paid directly, which made it so easy for families on the go. We cooled off with comforting pasta and ice cream, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and the view of village life slowly unfolding around us.
Charming Finds & Sweet Souvenirs
Afterward, we popped into a few artisan shops tucked along the cobbled alleys. We picked up a box of calissons — the region’s beloved almond-shaped candies — and found a beautifully woven Provence sling bag for our daughter, who proudly wore it for the rest of the trip. Little souvenirs, but filled with memory and meaning.
Sweet Pause at Ladurée Gordes
Later in the afternoon, we wandered uphill and stumbled upon a delightful surprise: Ladurée in Gordes. Yes — the world-famous Parisian patisserie has a boutique right in this hilltop village. Tucked into a stone building, Ladurée Gordes is as chic and refined as you’d expect, offering a luxury moment in the middle of rustic Provence. We took a break with coffee and macarons, soaking in both the sweetness and the elegance of the spot. It was the perfect way to cool down and recharge before heading back out into the sunshine.
Family Travel Tips from Our Walk in Gordes
Gordes is walkable, but don’t underestimate the summer sun and steep hills. We were glad we packed:

We left Gordes around 3 PM and continued toward Lourmarin, but part of us stayed behind. Gordes was one of those places I had dreamed about since the pandemic. And to be there — with my family — was a moment I’ll always carry with me. This day reminded me that dreams do come true, especially when you plan for them and allow room for serendipity.
