Our Favourite Family Experiences in Muskoka, Plus a Beautiful Stop in Elora

Known for its beautiful lakes, peaceful forests, elegant resorts, and iconic waterfront cottages, Muskoka is one of Canada’s most premium and beloved vacation destinations. Although it is often associated with luxury cottage living, Muskoka can also be a wonderful destination for families looking for outdoor adventures, meaningful experiences, and time to slow down together.

For our family getaway, we chose Bracebridge as our home base and planned several memorable experiences around the Muskoka region. We did not want an overly packed itinerary. Instead, we selected activities that allowed us to try something new, spend quality time together, and still leave room to rest and appreciate the beautiful surroundings.

Here are our favourite family-friendly Muskoka experiences, along with a scenic stop we made in Elora on the way.

A Beautiful Stop in Elora

Before continuing to Muskoka, we stopped in the charming town of Elora.

We enjoyed lunch at Elora Mill Hotel & Spa, overlooking the beautiful Elora Gorge. It was such a peaceful and scenic way to begin our family getaway.

After lunch, we stopped by Scoop Handmade Ice Cream, located just outside Elora Mill. We ordered the peanut butter chip and salted caramel flavours, which were the perfect sweet treats before continuing our drive.

Elora is a wonderful stop for families travelling toward Muskoka, especially when you want to break up the drive and make the journey feel like part of the vacation. Its historic buildings, river views, walkable downtown, and local treats make it worth visiting, even for just a few hours.

1. Horseback Trail Riding at Maple Lane Muskoka

One of the biggest highlights of our trip was horseback trail riding at Maple Lane Muskoka.

Exploring Muskoka’s peaceful forest trails on horseback was an exciting experience for our whole family. The beautiful scenery made the ride feel calm and adventurous at the same time.

It was also a meaningful experience because we were able to try something new together. Even though we had different comfort levels, we supported one another throughout the ride and created a family memory that we will always remember.

Horseback riding was definitely one of our favourite ways to experience Muskoka’s natural beauty.

2. Family Golf Lessons at South Muskoka

We also booked a family golf lesson at South Muskoka Curling & Golf Club.

This was such a fun and welcoming experience for our family. Having a lesson allowed us to learn the basics together without feeling pressured or intimidated.

Our instructor guided us through the proper stance, grip, and swing while keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable. It was a great activity for beginners and families with different skill levels.

Trying golf together gave us another opportunity to laugh, encourage one another, and enjoy Muskoka’s beautiful outdoors.

3. A Relaxing Spa Day and Lunch Overlooking Lake Rosseau

Muskoka is known for outdoor adventures, but it is also the perfect place to slow down and relax.

We enjoyed a peaceful spa experience at HydroSpa Muskoka, followed by lunch at the JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa.

The combination of relaxation, delicious food, and beautiful views of Lake Rosseau made this one of the most special parts of our trip.

It was a lovely reminder that a family vacation does not always have to be filled with nonstop activities. Sometimes, one of the best experiences is simply enjoying a beautiful meal, taking in the scenery, and appreciating the quiet moments together.

4. Cruising Lake Rosseau with Muskoka Cruises

A cruise on Lake Rosseau is one of the best ways to experience Muskoka’s iconic waterfront.

During our cruise with Muskoka Cruises, we saw beautiful cottages, boathouses, private islands, and impressive properties along the lake.

We also learned more about the history of the area and the families who have spent their summers in Muskoka for generations.

The cruise was relaxing and interesting for both adults and children. There was always something beautiful to see, and it gave us a different perspective of Muskoka that we would not have experienced from the road.

5. Exploring Downtown Bracebridge

We also enjoyed spending time in downtown Bracebridge.

The town has a welcoming, small-town atmosphere with local shops, restaurants, cafés, and scenic areas near the Muskoka River.

One of our favourite local food stops was Tita’s Bracebridge, where we enjoyed delicious Filipino cuisine.

Finding Filipino food during our Muskoka trip made the experience extra special for our family. The refreshing halo-halo & banana turon with ice cream were the perfect treat after a day of exploring, especially during the warmer weather.

We also loved visiting The Cedar Canoe Bookstore, a charming independent bookstore in downtown Bracebridge.

It was a peaceful place to browse books, discover local finds, and slow down between activities. As a family that enjoys reading and discovering unique local shops, it quickly became one of our favourite stops in town.

Families can also visit Bracebridge Falls for a short walk, beautiful views, and family photos.

Where to Stay: Tru by Hilton Bracebridge

For families looking for a convenient and comfortable home base, we recommend Tru by Hilton Bracebridge.

Its location made it easier for us to explore downtown Bracebridge and travel to the different activities on our itinerary, including horseback riding, golf, local restaurants, Lake Rosseau, and other sightseeing areas around Muskoka.

The hotel was modern, comfortable, and family-friendly. Some of our daughter’s favourite memories were making her own pancakes using the hands-free pancake machine at breakfast, playing foosball in the lobby, and swimming in the indoor pool after a full day of activities.

These simple family-friendly features made the stay more enjoyable for her and gave us easy ways to relax between our planned experiences.

Choosing a hotel in Bracebridge also helped us stay close to restaurants, shops, and everyday conveniences while still having access to memorable experiences throughout the Muskoka region.

For families planning a similar getaway, Tru by Hilton Bracebridge can be a practical home base for balancing sightseeing, outdoor adventures, and downtime.

Making Time for Swimming and Rest

Some of our favourite vacation moments were also the simplest ones.

After our activities, we made time to swim, rest, and talk about the day. These slower moments helped balance the more active parts of our trip.

Leaving open time in our itinerary made the vacation feel more relaxing and allowed us to be fully present with one another.adventures, and downtime.

Tips for Planning a Family Muskoka Getaway

Try to schedule only one main experience each day. This gives your family enough time to enjoy every activity without feeling rushed.

Book horseback riding, golf lessons, cruises, spa treatments, and popular restaurants in advance, especially when visiting during summer or on weekends.

Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, reusable water bottles, and extra layers. Muskoka weather can change throughout the day, especially near the lakes.

Consider choosing Bracebridge as your home base if you want convenient access to restaurants, shops, waterfalls, outdoor activities, and day trips around Muskoka.

Most importantly, choose activities that match your family’s interests. Muskoka has something for families who enjoy adventure, relaxation, food, nature, or simply spending quiet time together.

Final Thoughts

Our Muskoka getaway gave us the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, local discoveries, and meaningful family time.

From horseback riding and golf lessons to cruising Lake Rosseau, enjoying Filipino halo-halo, browsing a beautiful local bookstore, and swimming together at the end of the day, each experience added something different to our trip.

Our stop in Elora also made the journey feel more special and gave us a peaceful beginning to the vacation.

Muskoka may be known as one of Canada’s premium vacation destinations, but what made it truly special for us was the opportunity to slow down, try new experiences, and create meaningful memories as a family.

For families looking for a Canadian getaway that combines nature, comfort, adventure, and intentional time together, Muskoka deserves a place on your travel list.
